Police responding to a “suspicious person” call at a Lawrenceville home early Sunday found the house ablaze, officials said.
Investigators later determined the fire to be arson.
Gwinnett County fire Lt. Jerrod Barrett said firefighters were dispatched to the home on the 200 block of Amelia Garden Way at about 1 a.m. Sunday after police officers discovered the blaze. Crews had the fire under control in about 20 minutes — and were able to rescue a dog from the home — but the flames caused “major damage,” Barrett said.
Barrett said the fire was ruled arson due to several factors, including the suspicious person reported at the residence and the fact that the homeowners were not home at the time of the fire. The specific cause of the fire was not provided.
“There has been no arrest made as of yet and no charges have been filed,” Gwinnett fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said an in email late Sunday afternoon.
Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story said a suspect had been charged in connection with the fire. A fire department spokesman said Sunday afternoon that was not the case.
