David Gene Turpin of Gainesville had been in trouble before.

He is a convicted felon Hall County sheriff’s deputies say was wanted in connection with possession of a firearm.

When deputies went to his Holland Drive home Monday, Turpin refused to come out, sheriff’s office spokesman Deputy Stephen Wilbanks said.

That’s when the SWAT team was called and a “brief standoff” ensued.

“After a lengthy attempt to persuade Turpin to exit his residence voluntarily, the SWAT team utilized chemical agents to coax him from the house, and he was taken into custody without further incident,” Wilbanks wrote in a news release.

No one was injured during the operation.

A SWAT team standoff and arrest was also reported Monday afternoon in Barrow County after a man allegedly stole a car in Gwinnett County, crashed it into a subdivision sign and holed up in a nearby home. That man, identified by deputies as Joshua Sanchez Smith, was arrested about 5 p.m.
