Atlanta police are searching for a driver in a deadly hit-and-run.

The accident happened about 7:20 p.m. Sunday at Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway and Wood Street, according to an Atlanta police accident report.

Helen Anderson, 59, was pushing a shopping cart across the street when a 1995 GMC Sierra pickup truck hit her, police said. The impact of the crash threw her into another lane, where a second car hit her.

The driver of the pickup remained on the scene, police said. The driver of the second car did not.

The pickup driver told police he saw the cart but not the woman.

When he swerved to avoid it, he hit Anderson, according to the accident report.

Kelvin Flanagan, a witness to the crash, told police the pickup driver didn’t seem to be speeding but the driver of the second vehicle was.

Neighbor Mikeyla White told Channel 2 Action News “a lot of people looked up to” Anderson, known as “the neighborhood grandmother.”

She said she doesn’t understand how someone could hit Anderson and not stop.

"I advise them to turn themselves in because that was a great lady,” White told Channel 2.

Police have not released a description of the driver, but said the vehicle was a black four-door car.

Police asked anyone with information on the crash to call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
