A man was shot in the face while driving through East Atlanta on Saturday morning, setting off a chain-reaction crash that left several motorists with minor injuries.

Atlanta police said an officer was patrolling near the intersection of Moreland Avenue and Glenwood Avenue about 12:20 a.m. when he heard gunshots followed by the sound of cars crashing.

The gunshot victim was conscious at the scene and was taken to the hospital, Atlanta police spokesman Officer Anthony Grant said.

It’s unclear what led to the shooting, but investigators believe the shots were fired from another car.

“In an attempt to flee to safety, the victim collided into other vehicles at the intersection,” Grant said.

The crash involved four cars, but only resulted in minor injuries, police said. No suspects have been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.
