A man from metro Atlanta has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs and reckless driving after Lumpkin County authorities said he crashed into a Moe's restaurant Monday and seriously injured five people.

Steve Russell Moss, 28, of Woodstock, is still in a local hospital after the nine-car accident, which occurred about 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of South Chestatee Street and Morrison Moore Parkway in Dahlonega, the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday. His condition is unknown.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Moss was driving a Chevrolet Express cargo van and allegedly started a chain reaction that led to the collision and then crashed into the restaurant near the University of North Georgia.

A Dahlonega city worker was injured as he tried to get out of the way of the vehicles, the GSP said.

“The seriously injured were transported to local area hospitals,” Lumpkin Sheriff Stacy Jarrard said Tuesday on Facebook. “Multiple people with injuries continued to be checked out by area hospitals throughout the evening.”

Authorities have not specified the kind of drugs that were in Moss’ system or released any other details.
