A Douglasville man is accusing a veterinary hospital of botching his dog's surgery.

Axel the English bulldog has had a rough few weeks.

The 1-year-old pup was going to be neutered and have cherry eye surgery at a veterinary hospital in Douglasville on Feb. 15, but instead, he underwent bladder surgery by accident, according to his owner.

Mark Hutchins told Channel 2 Action News he plans to sue a doctor at the hospital over what he said was a botched surgery. He said the doctor mistook Axel for another brown and white English bulldog, which was slated for bladder surgery to remove kidney stones.

He told Channel 2 the doctor realized the mixup, but it was too late.

“On (Feb.) 20th, (the doctor) explained to me that he made the mistake, and that he himself had performed the surgery and ended up cutting the wrong dog open,” Hutchins told the news station.

The doctor told Channel 2 he wouldn’t comment on the matter because of the pending lawsuit. AJC.com is not identifying the doctor or hospital because they are not facing criminal charges.

Hutchins told the news station he was given paperwork that documents the bladder surgery. He added that the surgery has caused Axel to experience some complications, so he wants the hospital to pay for all future medical treatments his dog might need.
