An Atlanta police officer was arrested Tuesday after a confrontation with his son over missing alcohol turned physical, officials said.

According to new details outlined in a Roswell police report, Atlanta police Sgt. Kevin Walls confronted his son about the alcohol, which was missing from a refrigerator in the garage of the family’s home on Houze Way. The argument escalated, and Walls started walking toward his son, the incident report said.

At that point, Walls’ wife stepped in between her son and her husband, according to the report. She told an officer she saw her husband put down some objects he was holding and was worried he was going to try to fight her son.

Walls pushed forward and swung his arm at his son, hitting him on the right side of the face, according to the report. His wife, who was still standing between them, also was struck by the blow, she told police. She hit a wall and fell to the ground, and lay there for several minutes, according to the report.

Walls’ wife went upstairs to her room after the incident. Their son ran from the house to call 911. When police arrived, the teen’s face was red and had started to swell.

Police found Walls was the primary aggressor in the situation and arrested him on a simple battery (family violence) charge, AJC.com previously reported.

The police report indicated two sets of handcuffs were used.

Walls was taken to the Fulton County Jail and released hours later on a $5,000 bond.

In a statement, the Atlanta Police Department said Walls has been suspended from duty “with no police powers, pending an emergency hearing with Chief (Erika) Shields to determine his status while the criminal investigation is ongoing.”

Walls has been employed by the department since 1997, according to Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training records. He was promoted to sergeant in 2012, records show.
