One burglary suspect was shot in the arm and one was on the run a few hours after several suspects led Douglas County police on two separate chases Friday afternoon.

The police activity along I-20 prompted two schools to be placed on temporary lockdowns.

Douglas County police were chasing two stolen vehicles containing burglary suspects in opposite directions on Interstate-20 when both chases ended in crashes, according to Chief Deputy Stan Copeland with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

One chase ended near Ga. 5 and the other near Post Road, Copeland told Channel 2 Action News. When the suspects got out of their vehicle near Post Road, they began firing shots at deputies, Copeland said.

Deputies fired back, hitting one suspect in the arm, Copeland said. The injured suspect received non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital.

At the other crash scene, near Ga. 5, one suspect ran from police, Copeland said. Later Friday night, the man was taken into custody with the help of a police dog, Channel 2 reported.

The names of the suspects involved were not immediately released.

Two nearby schools, Mason Creek middle and elementary schools, were placed on lockdown due to the police activity, a school district spokeswoman said. Students were in after-school programs at the time of the lockdowns.

Delays were reported in the area due to the investigation Friday afternoon.
