A man will spend the rest of his life in prison because he killed a man and injured two others over $13, officials say.

Johnie Oliver, Jr was found guilty of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to a release from the DeKalb District Attorney’s Office.

Oliver shot and killed Rayonte Weems in June 2014 after he called Weems complaining about the quality of weed Weems sold him, according to the release. Oliver paid $13 for the weed.

Weems, Theodore Rollins and Yani Connor drove to meet Oliver on Swift Creek Drive.

Once Weems and Rolling got out the car, Oliver opened fire, killing Weems and leaving Rollins in a coma for two weeks. Weems was hit five times, most of which were in his back as he tried to get in the car, and Rollins was hit seven times.

Connor, who was still in the car, was hit once in the left thigh.

“This defendant chose a coward’s way to resolve his conflict,” DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James said. “He killed someone over just a handful of dollars … and could’ve killed two more people. This was senseless, and he deserves to be in prison for the rest of his life.”

Oliver has an additional 45 years on top of his life sentence, according to the release. Oliver will be transferred to the Department of Corrections.
