A violent confrontation at a DUI checkpoint in Hall County ended with a man dead, three Georgia state troopers wounded and an arrest, police said.
Multiple law enforcement officers were working a DUI checkpoint on Interstate 985 in Gainesville around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, when a Ford Explorer took off, according to Channel 2 Action News.
The chase ended on Industrial Boulevard when the SUV crashed into a patrol car and the two men inside got out and ran from authorities. They were caught about a mile away, where a trooper was forced to shoot and kill one of the men who resisted being handcuffed, Georgia State Patrol spokesman Capt. Mark Perry told Channel 2.
Perry told Channel 2 though three officers were wounded and taken to a nearby hospital, they will OK physically. Mentally and emotionally, Perry said, they will need some time to heal and sort out the evening’s events.
“I will say this, the troopers involved, I know them personally,” Perry said. “I know they have a strong faith in God and know that’s what’s going to take to get them through it.”
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now looking into the officer-involved shooting.
The names of the suspect killed and the one who was arrested have not been released.
