Counterfeit money leads to three arrests in Athens

Three Athens residents were arrested this week in connection with possessing counterfeit money.

A cashier at a McDonald’s drive-thru window reportedly saw Halley Michelle Hogan, 24, hand Justin Blake Gunter, 21, a movie “prop” bill, according to the Athens Banner-Herald.

Police said the cashier saw a notice printed on the bill that read, “FOR MOTION PICTURE USE ONLY.” It also warned, “This note is not legal, it is to be used for motion pictures.”

Police searched the car and said they found three more fake $100 bills, a small bag of heroin and several syringes. Hogan allegedly claimed she received the bill from Benjamin Corey Deberry, 24

Police later stopped Deberry while driving and said there were two counterfeit bills in his pocket, and a smoking pipe with residue, several syringes and a glass beaker in his van. A passenger, who appeared to have ingested drugs, was found unresponsive when police asked him questions.

All three suspects were arrested and charged on counts of forgery. Hogan was additionally charged with possession of heroin and Deberry with possession of drug-related objects.
