Cops: Man set mobile home fire, tried to take deputy’s gun

A Gainesville man set multiple fires inside a mobile home before he attempted to grab a deputy’s gun, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office said.

An “incoherent” Aaron Bentley Dunagan was arrested Wednesday after he refused deputies’ commands, Hall County sheriff’s Lt. Scott Ware said in a news release.

Authorities allege Dunagan, 36, was involved in a series of crimes April 23. He set fires inside the Vaughndale Circle mobile home and then later that day broke into a car and damaged it, Ware said.

Deputies and Hall County fire officials responded to the scene, where Ware said Dunagan refused their commands.

At one point, Dunagan grabbed for a deputy’s gun, Ware said.

Dunagan was taken to an Atlanta hospital and later released to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office’s custody.

He remained in the Hall County jail Thursday on charges of arson, obstruction, attempting to remove the weapon of a public official, entering auto, criminal damage to property and criminal trespass, according to jail records.

Bond has not been set for the arson and attempting to remove a public official’s weapon charges. He was given a $15,650 bond on the remaining charges.
