An argument over rent turned violent Friday when a Roswell landlord allegedly grabbed his gun and pistol-whipped his tenant’s son, causing the gun to fire near his face.

Lucas Vandercook told Channel 2 Action News and Roswell police he went to pay his father’s landlord, Nathan Jefferson, rent money.

Jefferson is accused of getting angry when Vandercook said he could pay a majority of the rent, but not all of it, Channel 2 reported. Jefferson then allegedly told Vandercook, “I need to get my gun,” before running to his car.

“He comes down five seconds later with a gun — a Glock,” Vandercook said. “Bam, he hits me in the face with a pistol.”

When Jefferson allegedly hit Vandercook, the gun fired right in front of his face, according to a police incident report obtained by AJC.com.

“When he hit the man with such force, the round went off,” Roswell police spokeswoman Lisa Holland told Channel 2.

She said the bullet went through a lamp and wall into the apartment next door, which is where it was found, the news station reported.

“Somebody could have been killed,” Holland said. “It was a very dangerous situation.”

When Vandercook began to call 911, Jefferson is accused of threatening him by saying, “If you call the cops, I’ll kill you,” Channel 2 reported.

Jefferson faces charges of aggravated assault and hindering a 911 call, Fulton County Jail records show. He remains in jail on a $50,000 bond.
