An Atlanta woman who initially told police she shot and killed a man who tried to rob her early Saturday morning has admitted to police she lied to cover for her boyfriend.

Chevis Ard, who lives at the home on Holly Drive in northwest Atlanta, now says her boyfriend, Kevin Dingman, shot the alleged robber in self-defense after he approached them around 4:45 a.m. Saturday morning, Atlanta police said Sunday. Police found the deceased man in the front yard of their home.

Police said Ard had a weapon when they responded to her 911 call. They also found a handgun and three loaded magazines on the man killed by Dingman. Police said the alleged robber was also wearing two pairs of black latex gloves and black clothing.

Ard, who is six months pregnant, told police she lied in her initial statement because Dingman is a convicted felon. Police said she initially told them she was checking her mail when the man approached her, holding a gun to her head. She had said she'd reached into her purse as if to collect money, but instead grabbed her gun. She also said there was a second man shooting at her from further away.

However, after investigators began working the crime scene, police questioned Ard further because of inconsistencies in her story.

Ard then admitted Dingman had actually shot the alleged robber after they were both confronted by the man and a second armed suspect while leaving their home. Both Ard and Dingman then left the scene, with Ard returning later and calling 911.

Atlanta police have not yet released the deceased suspect’s name, and the shooting remains under investigation.
