An Atlanta police officer who responded to one accident Sunday on Ga. 400 barely escaped another crash, officials said.

The officer used his patrol car to block traffic after an accident on southbound Ga. 400 at Lenox Road and exited the vehicle, Atlanta police Officer Kim Jones said Monday. The lights were activated.

As the officer returned to the vehicle, a blue Audi driving at a high rate of speed struck a black Ford. The impact caused the Ford to cross two lanes of traffic and strike the officer’s patrol vehicle.

The officer ran toward the right shoulder to avoid being hit, Jones said.

The driver of the black Ford was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. Before leaving the scene, he lost consciousness at one point, Jones said. He regained consciousness, was alert and did not have any visible injuries.

The driver of blue Audi, identified as Abraham Martinez, was not injured. He arrested on a charge of driving under the influence and taken to the city jail, Jones said.

All of the vehicles had major damage and were towed from the scene.
