A Cobb County teenager was struck by an SUV and killed Monday evening while riding his bicycle near Smyrna, police said.
Officers were dispatched to the wreck on Smyrna Powder Springs Road shortly after 5:40 p.m., Cobb police spokesman Sgt. Wayne Delk said. Authorities said the 15-year-old Osborne High School student was riding on the sidewalk with a friend when he tried to cross the street at Neese Drive. A Ford Explorer driven by a 20-year-old Marietta woman hit the teen, killing him.
The teen’s friend, who remained on the sidewalk, was not injured, police said.
The fatal wreck occurred as it was getting dark and there weren’t any streetlights nearby, according to Delk. It was also raining heavily.
No charges are expected in the crash, police said.
Cobb police have not released the name of the 15-year-old, but Cobb County School District officials said counselors were brought in to assist grieving classmates.
“We were saddened to learn of the tragic passing of an Osborne student,” a district spokesperson said in a statement. “School leaders and counselors will continue to be available on campus to support the school community as they mourn the loss of one of their own.”
