A repeat felon has been sentenced after he was convicted of two counts of aggravated assault for attacking his girlfriend in Smyrna before fleeing to Mexico, authorities said.
Benjamin Harmon Saine, 41, will spend 18 years in prison without parole, Cobb County District Attorney Vic Reynolds said in a news release.
On Dec. 11, 2016, Saine beat his girlfriend and put his hands around her neck, squeezing until she had trouble breathing, the release said. He also threatened to hit her with a piece of a door frame he held over his head.
While on bond awaiting trail, he assaulted her again and failed to appear in court, the release said. He was also charged with kidnapping her in Atlanta.
U.S. Marshals took Saine into custody in Mexico in June. He was eventually deported back to the U.S., the release said.
Saine’s previous convictions include aggravated battery, drugs and theft, the release said.
