Two cars are totaled and a man is in custody after a chase sent him and an Atlanta police officer over an embankment, authorities said.
Atlanta police arrested Christopher Cage, 28, on multiple charges after he allegedly led the officer on a chase that caused them both to crash Wednesday morning.
An officer stopped Cage after he allegedly made an illegal U-turn at the intersection of Piedmont Road and Lakeshore Drive about 2 a.m., police spokesman Officer Jarius Daugherty said. Cage pulled out a license that belonged to someone else, according to police.
When the officer asked Cage to step out of the car, he instead put the car into drive and sped off, Daugherty said. A different officer driving an unmarked patrol car later saw Cage’s vehicle and followed him, officials said. During the pursuit, authorities said both cars left the roadway and careened over the embankment at Armour Drive and Clayton Road.
Authorities said Cage ran, but officers caught up with him at a location a short distance away. Both Cage and the officer were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. Their injuries are not life-threatening, Daugherty said.
Cage was arrested and charged with failure to obey a traffic control device, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, fleeing and attempting to elude. An investigation is ongoing.
