Nearly six months after the New Year’s Eve shooting death of a popular Mundy’s Mill High School student, three teenagers have been charged with felony murder.
Clayton County authorities said Friday that Dequan Robinson, 16, Aaron Drummond, 16, and Jakeem Williams, 17, are charged with murder in the death of 18-year-old Cherish Williams of Jonesboro, police said.
Three other teens — Keenan Scurry, 17, Ulas Scurry, 15, and Norman Logan, 18 — also are charged in connection with “a rash of criminal gang activity,” Clayton police spokeswoman Ashanti Marbury said.
All are being charged as adults.
The indictment contained a total of 152 charges. Other charges include armed robbery, home invasion, aggravated assault and attempted armed robbery, officials said.
The deadly shooting happened about 7:40 p.m. on Dec. 31 in the parking lot of Independence Park.
Williams was sitting in a car with two friends when three armed men ordered them to get out and to hand over their belongings, Marbury said. One of the men fired a shot that hit Williams, who died at a local hospital.
Classmates, teachers and faculty described Williams as a bright, funny young woman who was “the pulse” of the school. She was on track to graduate from Mundy’s Mill last month.
“She was a leader,” school guidance counselor Victoria Martin told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution shortly after Williams’ death. “She impacted a lot of people.”
The case against the suspects was presented to a Clayton County grand jury Wednesday, Marbury said.
As far back as January, police linked Robinson, Drummond and Keenan Scurry to armed robberies in the Independence Park area. The investigation continued, and Ulas Scurry and Jakeem Williams were arrested in February, according to police.
Logan, who has been in custody since August 2016 on a home invasion charge, was linked to the other suspects as the investigation developed.
