A 5-year-old boy was reunited with his father after a carjacking in Fairburn and a chase in Union City, police said.

According to Fairburn police Deputy Chief Anthony Bazydlo, the child’s father stopped at a pawn shop on Broad Street early Monday and left the boy in the car with the engine running and locked the doors.

A 15-year-old broke into the man’s Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat and drove away, police said. After realizing the child was in the car, the teen dropped off the boy along Jonesboro Road in Union City, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The child’s father, Joshua Waddell, told the news station he was inside the store when he heard his car rev up.

As he turned to look, he saw the vehicle backing out of the parking lot with his son inside.

“My heart sank,” Waddell said. “All I could think of was Knox. That was my main concern ... I’m blown away that someone 15 years old could ever do that to a child, take a child in a vehicle.”

The child ended up knocking on Polly Binoin’s door and saying he was kidnapped, she told Channel 2.

“He was knocking on the door, and I said, ‘Who is it?’ And he said, ‘A bad man just kidnapped me,’” said Binoin, who quickly called 911.

Union City police spotted the car and pursued it until the chase ended on Buffington Road, Bazydlo said.

The car was recovered and the teen was placed in custody. Police told Channel 2 they found cocaine, a stolen gun and counterfeit money on him.

He faces kidnapping, auto theft and other charges in Fairburn. AJC.com does not publish the names of minors who are being charged as juveniles.
