Rockdale woman injured in shootout after ‘targeted’ home invasion

A home invasion in Rockdale County ended with two doors that had been kicked down and a resident exchanging gunfire with two suspects, injuring the victim and one of the alleged thieves, authorities said.

A targeted home invasion in Rockdale County ended in gunfire and sent a woman to a hospital Tuesday evening.

The woman was alone inside her Lost Valley Drive home when two men kicked in the front door, Rockdale County Sheriff Eric Levett said. She ran upstairs to her bedroom before the men kicked down that door as well, he said.

Gunfire was exchanged. Authorities responding about 6 p.m. found her shot twice, and she was flown to a hospital for surgery. Her condition was not released.

“We don’t know if the victim was followed,” Levett told Channel 2 Action News from the scene. “We don’t know why this house was targeted. Those are pieces that we are trying to put together.”

The intruders were gone when deputies arrived. Later Tuesday night, a man with a gunshot wound was found walking in the Browns Ferry Mill Road area, near the Rockdale-DeKalb county line.

His condition was also not provided. The sheriff’s office is still investigating to determine if there is a connection to the home invasion.

Sean Carpenter, who lives in the neighborhood, said the woman’s home is one of the most visible on the street.

He rattled off a spate of recent high-profile shootings. In September, three masked teenage boys were killed by a homeowner during an attempted robbery on White Oak Court, according to authorities. Last week, a shooting at the Dart Container facility in Conyers killed one employee and landed another behind bars.

“I want to see effort,” he told the news station. “I haven’t seen a patrol car in this neighborhood in months.”
