Pregnant Georgia mother shot, killed while holding 3-year-old’s hand

8 people have been taken into custody.

A pregnant mother was shot and killed Monday night while holding her 3-year-old son’s hand, according to Athens-Clarke County police.

Bystanders were already attempting CPR when authorities arrived at the Clarke Garden apartments on Carriage Court just after 9:30 p.m., agency spokesman Geof Gilland told reporters at the scene.

The woman, identified by police as 24-year-old Auriel Callaway, was taken to a hospital, where she died.

Callaway, who was four months pregnant, lived at the apartment complex, Gilland said. The unborn baby did not survive. Her 3-year-old was unharmed and is being cared for by relatives, according to police.

Detectives are still trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. It is not known if Callaway was the intended target of the gunfire, Gilland said.

Multiple people were detained Tuesday morning by police, but they were questioned and released.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Athens-Clarke County police Detective Scott Black or Detective Paul Johnson at 706-613-3330.
