An Atlanta man died after an officer-involved shooting incident early Saturday in College Park, the GBI said.
A Fulton County police officer responded to the Baby Grand Piano Bar in the 5000 block of Old National Highway regarding a person hit by a vehicle, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said in a statement.
The officer encountered the vehicle, and the officer and an armed security guard fired their guns, Miles said. The man drove the car from the parking lot, and the car wrecked a short distance away.
“The subject was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he later died,” Miles said.
The man was identified as Willie Ivy III, 29, according to Tami Sedivy-Schroder, senior investigator with the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office. No cause of death was released.
The autopsy will be conducted Monday, said Sedivy-Schroder.
The car involved in the incident came to rest on its roof in a parking lot.
The GBI is investigating the incident, which is standard in police-involved shooting cases.
In January and February of this year, the GBI conducted 17 officer-involved shooting investigations in Georgia, Miles said.
The GBI investigated 78 police-involved shootings in the state last year.
