A man was shot and killed Friday at a townhouse complex just outside the city of Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County police said.

Neighbors called 911 just after 5 a.m. to report hearing gunshots on Patterson Circle in a neighborhood off Patterson Road.

“When the officers got out here, they found several shell casings on the ground in front of one of the townhomes, and they found a lot of bullet holes inside of the door,” Gwinnett police Cpl. Michele Pihera told AJC.com from the scene.

The door was secured, and officers had to use a ram to bust it down, she said. It fell in the foyer, just short of the bottom of the stairs where the victim was lying dead of apparent gunshot wounds.

Police identified the victim as 44-year-old Eddie Waters. He lived at the home where the homicide occurred, Pihera said.

“We don’t know a whole lot about the victim and his dealings right now, but we know that he possibly lives alone, and we're exploring all avenues and tips in this investigation,” she said. “We don’t know if it’s drug-related. We don’t know if it’s domestic-related. We just need people to come forward.”

She said it is possible the victim was inside his home when shots were fired from the parking lot, but they are not ruling out other possibilities. Investigators are hoping footage from personal surveillance cameras or doorbell cameras in the neighborhood will help them piece things together.

Because the shooting happened when many of the complex’s residents were sleeping, Pihera said investigators do not have many good leads as to a possible shooter.

“As of now, no suspects have been identified in this case,” she said. “We are seeking tips.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Gwinnett police. Tipsters can remain anonymous, and be eligible for rewards of up to $2,000, by contacting Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477, texting information to 274637 or visiting the Crime Stoppers website.
