A man was ambushed Thursday morning in a shooting at a Cobb County apartment complex, police said.

Officers responded about 9:24 a.m. to a call about the incident at the Jasmine at the Galleria apartments on Cumberland Way, Smyrna police spokesman Louis Defense said.

According to police, the shooter was crouched behind a car in the parking lot and lying in wait for the victim to come out of his apartment.

The gunman shot the 28-year-old victim multiple times, Defense said. He was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with wounds that did not appear to be life threatening, police said.

The shooter, who was wearing a black hat, faded blue jeans and a black shirt at the time of the ambush, remained at large Thursday afternoon, Defense said.

“Until we take this bad guy off the street,” he said, “he’s a danger to other people. He showed a reckless disregard for human life in this apartment complex this morning.”

The complex is close to the scene of Monday’s deadly shooting in a Carrabba’s parking lot near Cumberland Mall.

Mezaio Pickett, 26, was shot and killed during a Craigslist sale, police said. Vincent Diandrez Brooks, 22, of Jonesboro, and Damien Akeen Scott, 22, of Decatur, were arrested on murder charges in connection with that incident.

“This is a very quiet neighborhood,” Defense said of the area of Thursday’s shooting. “(The shooting) is very concerning to us.”

No other details were released.
