A man who authorities believe shot and killed a resident at a Dunwoody apartment complex has died in a car wreck in Clayton County, police said.

Dunwoody police said the suspect, who was a 42-year-old man from Ellenwood, was involved in the crash while trying to evade authorities.

Investigators were searching after a man was fatally shot in a parking deck underneath the Arrive Perimeter luxury apartments on Asbury Square. The complex is located just off Ashford Dunwoody Road and across the street from Perimeter Mall.

The victim was found shot in the chest around 5:20 a.m. by Dunwoody officers responding to several reports of screaming and gunshots in the area. Officers and DeKalb County paramedics tried to revive him, but the man died at the scene, according to Dunwoody police Sgt. Robert Parsons.

The 45-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was a resident of the apartment complex. Police believe the victim and suspect knew each other.

Later, Dunwoody detectives and DeKalb police officers traveled to Ellenwood to look for the alleged shooter, but the man took off in a car, Parsons said.

Police chased him into Clayton County, where he drove into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into a commercial vehicle on Bouldercrest Road near Jones Road, according to the Georgia State Patrol. The state agency is investigating the crash.

The driver died at the scene. His name has not been released.
