A teenager was shot by deputies Saturday morning after a two-county pursuit ended in a Clayton County neighborhood, authorities said.

The chase began shortly after 7:30 a.m. when Fayetteville police spotted the 16-year-old driving recklessly and attempted to pull him over, the GBI said.

The teen who was not identified, fled from officers, prompting them to call in the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office for assistance. A short time later, a deputy spotted the car driving through several yards on a dead-end street in a Jonesboro neighborhood, authorities said.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop and deputies tried taking the driver into custody, GBI spokeswoman Natalie Ammons said.

As they did, the teen reportedly accelerated toward them, prompting deputies to fire their guns. It’s unclear how many times the driver was shot, but the GBI said he was taken to a nearby and hospital is expected to survive.

One deputy suffered minor injuries, investigators said.

The incident marks the 46th officer-involved shooting the GBI has been asked to investigate this year.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don't involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI's tally.
