One person is dead and at least two people are on the run after a shooting at a Clayton County gas station that sent frightened customers running for cover.

Officers who responded to the 24-hour Shell gas station on Ga. 85 near Riverdale found a man dead in an SUV, Clayton County police Capt. William Ibarrondo told Channel 2 Action News.

A preliminary investigation indicates the unidentified victim may have been in an argument with the gunmen before the shooting, which occurred sometime before 11 p.m. Wednesday.

According to surveillance footage, he tried to leave before the gunfire erupted. However, the shooters got out of a vehicle and fired at the man’s SUV as several customers were at gas pumps. No other injuries were reported.

Another customer was inside the store when shots rang out, Channel 2 reported. A couple of rounds hit her vehicle, which was parked at one of the pumps, according to the news station.

The gunmen returned to their car after the shooting and sped away from the scene, police said.

Authorities have not released the surveillance video or descriptions of the shooters and their vehicle.

The GBI is assisting Clayton County police in the investigation.
