Victim in deadly hit-and-run ID’d; search for driver continues

Police are searching for a driver accused of fleeing from police during a traffic stop then hitting and killing a bicyclist in downtown Atlanta, police said.

About 4 p.m. Monday, Atlanta police responded to a call about two vehicles related to suspicious activity in Midtown.

As officers attempted to pull over a Chevrolet HHR, it sped away from the scene, Atlanta police Officer Stephanie Brown said. Police were advised not to pursue the station wagon.

Shortly after, the station wagon hit and killed 37-year-old Andrew Whitlock at the intersection of Luckie Street and Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard, Channel 2 Action News reported. The victim was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died.

“The Chevrolet HHR was recovered a short time later in northwest Atlanta, but no suspect has yet been located or arrested,” Brown said.

The investigation blocked Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard between Luckie and Marietta streets.
