An Atlanta police officer charged with vehicular homicide in a deadly drag racing crash last September turned himself in to authorities late Thursday, the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office confirmed Friday.
Shawn Jones Jr. was booked into the Fulton County jail in connection with the crash that killed his passenger, Ramish Attai, 20, of Lilburn.
Jones, who was off duty at the time, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he had surgery.
Jones and another person, Jade Dibaje, face vehicular homicide, speeding, racing and reckless driving charges.
They are both out of jail on $25,000 bond, according to records.
Jones, the son of retired Atlanta Assistant Police Chief Shawn Jones Sr., was driving on Peachtree Street on Sept. 14 when he failed to maintain his lane, left the road and hit a curb, according to an incident report.
Jones’ car drove along the curb at a high rate of speed and traveled through the Peachtree and Spring streets intersection before hitting a building.
The case is expected to go before a grand jury in the next 30 days.

Jones has been with the department since November 2011 and worked in the airport division. According to Channel 2 Action News, he is still employed but has not returned to active service.
