A man accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend in a Gainesville apartment complex last week also faces drug and weapons charges, police confirmed Thursday.

Christopher Vargas Zayas, 21, of Gainesville, was already in the Hall County jail on murder charges when authorities tacked on the additional charges, Gainesville police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said.

Zayas is accused of shooting Carly Dorian Andrews, 26, in the chest Sept. 6 at the Glenn Cove Apartments, where the two lived. Police were called to the Norton Drive apartments about a self-inflicted or accidental shooting.

Police took additional warrants for Zayas on Monday for charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Authorities have not said if drugs were a factor in the shooting.

Zayas remains in jail without bond.
