Local and federal police are investigating a bomb threat at the downtown Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center, police said.

“Zone 5 units are assisting the Federal Police at 61 Forsyth Street SW on a Bomb Threat,” Atlanta police spokeswoman Elizabeth Espy said in an emailed statement about 3:23 p.m. Tuesday.

Nearly 5,000 employees working for 21 federal agencies are housed at the facility. They were forced to shelter in place.

The Federal Protective Service, which protects federal facilities, their occupants and visitors, is leading the investigation, General Services Administration spokeswoman Saudia Muwwakkil told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
