It was a scary Thursday for some Atlanta Public Schools students when staff at Bethune Elementary received suspicious packages and Atlanta police ordered the evacuation of the school.
The incident at Bethune Elementary happened about 10:30 a.m., Atlanta Public Schools spokeswoman Jill Strickland Luse said. Atlanta firefighters and police SWAT officers were called to campus on Northside Drive, Officer Kim Jones said.
Students and staff were temporarily relocated to Brown Middle School on James P. Brawley Drive while officials conducted a sweep of the school.
“Law enforcement authorities confiscated the packages and conducted a search throughout the campus and deemed it safe for students to return to Bethune Elementary School at approximately 12:30 p.m.,” Luse said. “All students and staff are safe.”
Students in after-school programs and those who walk to school were transported back to Bethune Elementary in time for regular dismissal.
