A parolee suspected in a sting of auto break-ins and at least one home burglary was arrested Friday morning following a foot chase in Athens, police said.
Courtney Marque Brown, 29, was taken into custody after police responded to a report of several cars being broken into in the 1100 block of Barnett Shoals Road, Athens police spokesman Officer Kenneth Brooks said.
According to police, Brown entered two vehicles and stole a gun, which was recovered during his arrest.
He is also charged in several early morning car break-ins that occurred a day earlier in the area of Old Lexington Road and Gaines Court, according to police. Brown is accused of breaking into three vehicles outside one home and several others that were parked nearby.
In addition to the vehicle break-ins, Brown is believed to have entered a home on Crestwood Drive on June 11. In that case, a couple woke up to find a man inside their bedroom, authorities said in a news release. The homeowners called the police, but the suspect was gone by the time officers arrived.
Brown faces 12 counts of entering an auto, three counts of first-degree burglary, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, parole violation and probation violation, jail records show.
According to Brooks, investigators used home surveillance footage to link Brown to the alleged crime spree. He remains held at the Clarke County jail without bond.
Georgia Department of Corrections records show he has served two stints in prison, one from September 2014 to March 2015, and the second from December 2016 to October 2018. Brown’s convictions include drug possession, burglary and entering vehicles in Clarke, Morgan and Oconee counties, records show.
