Authorities believe the man found Saturday face down in a creek off Sudderth Road in Gwinnett County drowned to death.

Stanley Scott Maddox, 42, of Buford, was positively identified Monday and an autopsy was performed.

"There were no signs of trauma and no signs of a shooting or stabbing," Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said in an email statement Tuesday. "All signs point to drowning, but all of the lab results are not back yet."

Lab work on blood could take six weeks to return with results, police said.

Authorities were called by a family who was out searching the woods for their missing relative and found the body.

Police spokesman Jeffery Richter on Sunday said the family believed they had found Maddox, who had not been heard from in about a month.

Relatives told Channel 2 Action News that Maddox had a criminal record and outstanding warrants when he disappeared.

"He was a good person, you know, he had a past that was held against him, but he was a good person, would give you the shirt off his back," friend Brittany Pirkle told Channel 2.
