Atlanta police are investigating a string of break-ins at a gated Buckhead apartment complex. One resident said thinks the thieves hit vacant units during the holidays when people were out of town.

Georgia Tech doctoral student Bryan Hare told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he and his fiancée have lived at the Marquis at Buckhead complex since August. It’s about three miles from the campus where Hare is working on his PhD in chemical and biomolecular engineering.

“I thought it was a pretty secure area,” he said.

Hare left town during the holidays to visit family in Orlando. When he returned, he saw the lock to his door was damaged. Inside, several items were missing, including video game consoles, games, wine and Star Wars memorabilia. Hare estimates $1,600 worth of items were stolen.

The complex requires renters to have insurance, but the $1,000 deductible means he’s mostly out of luck. Hare called police late Saturday to investigate the theft.

“The victim stated he received an e-mail notification from his property’s leasing office advising several residential units were broken into,” Atlanta police said in an emailed statement. “The victim stated he returned home after receiving the notification and noticed that his front door was damaged.”

The complex is gated, so it’s not clear how the thieves accessed the apartments. Damage to the door locks was barely visible, Hare noted.

The complex’s management had steel rings installed around the locks in hopes of thwarting future break-ins, Hare said.
