Atlanta police confident chaos in Charlottesville won’t happen here

It’s likely not a matter of “if” but “when” white supremacists will stage the kind of rally in Atlanta that overwhelmed Charlottesville law enforcement over the weekend.

And where white supremacists go counter-demonstrators will follow, creating a volatile mix that, as witnessed in Virginia, can quickly spiral out of control.

Metro Atlanta policing agencies certainly have plenty of experience dealing with such protests. By and large, they’ve managed to avoid chaos by employing a tried-and-true best practice that, for whatever reason, failed on the streets of Charlottesville.
