The Stone Mountain man accused of wrecking a car Monday and stealing the vehicle of the good Samaritan who tried to help him has been arrested, police said.

Steven Jerome Jackson, 51, was picked up overnight by police, and is being charged with theft by taking auto, theft by shoplifting, and hit-and-run, Dunwoody police spokesman Timothy Fecht said Tuesday.

Just before 11 a.m., Dunwoody police said Jackson allegedly stole a TV from the Walmart on Ashford Dunwoody Road and fled in a white Dodge Challenger, authorities said. Fecht said the man refused to heed a police traffic stop.

Jackson allegedly sped south along Ashford Dunwoody Road, disregarding traffic lights until he collided with another vehicle while running a red light at Hammond Drive, Fecht said.

"The suspect lost control of his vehicle, struck a light pole and came to rest in the northbound lanes," he said. "A concerned citizen stopped at the accident at which time the suspect took the citizen's vehicle and fled the scene."

Fecht said the suspect didn't show a weapon during the incident.

Jackson is in custody at the DeKalb County Jail.
