Shaunita Walker and Mitchell Mormon Jr. were on their first date a week after meeting at their new employee orientation session.
“He was such a gentleman,” Walker said of Mormon.
But what started as a good evening turned deadly after a comment Mormon made to another bar patron about President-elect Donald Trump, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Mormon, 34, was killed in a double shooting Saturday at Church Bar along Edgewood Avenue. Walker, 25, was injured and is recovering out of state.
The two were at the bar when the alleged shooter tried to talk to Walker and said something disrespectful, the news station reported.
When Walker told Mormon what happened, he confronted the man and jokingly told the shooter he voted for Trump. The men continued arguing, then the alleged shooter left and came back with a gun, the news station reported.
“When I heard the first shot and it went into my arm, I just grabbed my arm and began to scream,” Walker said. “And then I heard two more shots and I saw (Mormon) on the ground.”
Walker said she doesn’t think the Trump comment led to the incident and that the alleged shooter was looking for trouble.
“Please call the police if it’s your friend, your brother,” she said. “He took somebody’s life for no reason.”
Atlanta police are hoping security footage leads to an arrest. One of the men was wearing a white jacket and the other was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and carrying a backpack.
Anyone who may have cellphone video is asked to contact police.
