Alpharetta police say a man who drove to Marietta to meet a woman he met online was set up.

Johnathan Fannon, 25, of Alpharetta, thought he would meet a woman named Shantel, whom he met on the website OK Cupid, he told police.

Instead, on Feb. 24, while Fannon waited outside a building at the Manchester Apartments on Misty Lane, he was attacked and robbed, according to a police report.

A man got in his car using the rear driver side door and immediately grabbed Fannon’s neck, the report states.

Fannon told his attacker that his wallet was on the center console, then they struggled over it until the man took the wallet, the report states.

Alpharetta police spokesman Officer Jason Muenzer told Channel 2 Action News that he didn’t think Fannon’s date ever intended to show her face.

“We believe this individual was set up,” Muenzer told the news station.

Muenzer said police recommend using a video application such as Facetime or Skype to make sure this person you think you’re talking to matches the profile photo.

Police did get a partial finger print off the rear car door, but the suspect ran off and wasn’t caught, the report states.
