It was about eight months ago when a College Park man sped away from a traffic stop and nearly hit an Alpharetta officer, police said.
But the hunt for the man never ceased, and now the suspect, Jason Lovett, is in custody, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The trouble began when an officer stopped a suspicious car. The vehicle drove away, nearly hitting the officer with a side-view mirror.

“The officer was questioning the driving,” Alpharetta officer Howard Miller said. “The story was inconsistent with the info he was providing to the officer, who started to question the passenger, at which time he noticed a smell of marijuana coming from inside the car."

The driver bolted.

"The vehicle took off in the direction of North Point Mall,” Miller said. “The officer attempted to catch up, but he was driving too fast for our officer to catch up.”

Video shows the officer eventually catching up to the fleeing car, and the driver running into nearby woods, Channel 2 reported.

Last week, Gwinnett County police took Lovett into custody and sent him back to Fulton County. He’s now charged with obstructing an officer and other offenses, the news station reported.

And some drivers in the area are glad.

“Hopefully there's justice and he serves some time,” Kirk Roberson said. “Some real time. Not just something that's a week and out on probation."
