A woman faces drug and reckless driving charges after Alpharetta police say she nearly hit a group of kids playing on a sidewalk.

Sylvia Rosalie Cox, 54, of Cumming, is accused of nearly hitting the children as she drove with drugs in her system Sept. 6.

According to a police report, Cox drove her car through the park, narrowly missed the children and hit another car before leaving the scene. Cox’s behavior led Officer D. Lambert to believe she was under the influence.

“How come you rode down a sidewalk with a bunch of kids?” he asked in a dash-cam video obtained by Channel 2 Action News. “Do you remember doing that?”

Cox said she didn’t remember doing it and she seemed distracted by invisible birds, Lambert noted in the police report.

Witnesses at the park told Channel 2 they had to help move some of the children out of the way, or the incident could’ve been worse.

“There were a whole lot of cheerleaders and kids out in this section practicing,” John McLaughlin said.

Cox was taken to North Fulton Hospital following the incident, then to the Alpharetta jail. Her court date is scheduled for Oct. 18.
