Deputies are searching for a driver they say struck and killed a 20-year-old man in Heard County before fleeing the scene.

The fatal wreck occurred about 8 p.m. Monday as Christian North walked along Armstrong Mill Road in Franklin, Channel 2 Action News reported.

His body was discovered by his mother, Teresa North, who was on her way to pick him up, she told the news station.

“All I could do was scream,”  she said. “How could you just drive away after you hit my baby like that?”

North, who leaves behind a 2-year-old son, was found in the road about a quarter-mile from his home. He had celebrated his 20th birthday just two days earlier, his mother said.

“He did not deserve this,” Teresa North said. “He hadn’t even lived his life yet.”

She said she saw taillights down the road as the vehicle that hit her son sped away, but the driver hasn’t come forward.

Deputies said the vehicle may have been red, orange or rust-colored and that it likely has front-end and windshield damage.

“Please be human. Have a heart and turn yourself in,” Teresa North pleaded. “I don’t want to press charges. I just want to know why — why did you go away? If it was your child, would you have went away?”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Georgia State Patrol or Heard County detectives.
