Over the last two weeks, thieves have swiped expensive jewelry and cash from homes in a well-known gated community in Henry County, according to police.
All of the victims are Indian, stoking fears that the burglaries in the Eagle’s Landing Country Club community aren’t random.
“What was a little bit unnerving is so far they’re targeting Indian families because Indian families typically keep gold jewelry,” one of the victims, who asked to remain anonymous, told Channel 2 Action News.
Police cannot corroborate homeowners’ suspicions at this time because they are still investigating the break-ins.
In total, about $50,000 worth of jewelry, cash and other items were stolen from three houses, the victims told police. Thieves shattered windows behind the houses to gain entry before leaving undetected, despite a security guard being on the premises 24 hours a day, Channel 2 reported.
One family told the news station that they lost $30,000 worth of jewelry, while a mother and daughter came back from a karate class to find $9,000 in cash and an expensive necklace missing from their house. The man who spoke to Channel 2 was the victim of the third break-in, which took place last Saturday night.
The property owners association held a meeting Thursday to talk about adding patrols and extra security measures due to the burglaries, Channel 2 reported.
