Tennis event to benefit preschool charity
Soleil Laurel Canyon, an active adult master-planned community in Canton, will host its third annual Soleil Tennis Charity Event, benefitting the Ralph Bunche Center, a nonprofit that provides resources and services to Head Start pre-K students and pre-school intervention.
The event is 6 to 11 p.m. May 3 and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 4.

Self-defense class offered for women
The Centerville Community Center will host self-defense classes for women from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays through May 20 at 3025 Bethany Church Road, Snellville.
Learn to anticipate, recognize and deal with dangerous situations. Learn to block punches, break loose from holds, and striking techniques. Cost: $10 per person for four weeks. For any age or fitness level.

Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society Inc. will host the Oakton Spring Garden Party 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at 581 Kennesaw Ave. NW in Marietta.
Enjoy a Victorian carriage photo opportunity, Maypole dance by the Root House junior docents, Civil War reenactors, a tour of Oakton’s gardens, and, for the first time ever, a tour of Oakton’s 1890 carriage house, and scrumptious food and drink.This event marks the 175th anniversary of historic Oakton.

Fulton County is seeking youth commissioners to help develop policies and legislation to address the concerns of young people.
A student must be a Fulton resident, attend a school within the county, be in 9th through 11th grade during the 2013-14 school year and submit a completed application and two-page essay.
