A 21-year-old Clarke County woman accused of stabbing to death her newborn was arrested and jailed Friday morning, according to police.

Investigators have not yet determined when the baby was born, but believe the boy lived only hours, Capt. Clarence Holeman with Athens-Clarke County police told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“We know it (the birth) was sometime today,” Holeman said by phone Thursday night.

Police issued an arrest warrant late Thursday for Cassandra Elyse Norwood of Athens, and she was placed under guard at an Athens hospital, police said.

Norwood was released from the hospital Friday morning and was transported to the Clarke County jail, where she was booked in at 10:26 a.m., records show.

Norwood was charged with malice murder, felony murder and aggravated assault and was being held Friday night without bond.

A 911 caller reported shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday that the baby was lifeless inside a Great Oak Drive home, on the east side of Athens, Assistant Chief Fred Stephens with Athens-Clarke County police said in a news release. Emergency responders were dispatched the home, where they found the deceased baby.

“Police determined that there was foul play and then secured the residence and began meticulously examining the scene and interviewing family members who live there,” Stephens said in the release.

Norwood lives in the home with her parents and other relatives. Investigators have not released information regarding a motive in the baby’s death.

An autopsy was conducted Friday at the GBI crime lab.
