A man was airlifted by emergency personnel Thursday after being shot in the head after jumping from a vehicle in Spalding County.

According to Spalding County Sheriff Wendell Beam, deputies about 9:30 a.m. were dispatched to Georgia Highway 16 near Wani Road, east of Griffin, in response to a call about a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, they found a man who had been shot in the head but was conscious and alert.

The man had previously been in a vehicle on Hwy. 16, Beam said, and was shot as he jumped from the vehicle.

The victim was treated at the scene and airlifted to Macon Medical Center.

The Spalding County Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigative Division is handling the case.
