A Norcross man was arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals Monday, one week after a Gwinnett County police supervisor spotted his severely malnourished Doberman pinscher walking down a local road.

Gwinnett County police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera said Monday that a west precinct supervisor spotted the “skeletal” looking Doberman on the sidewalk along Peachtree Corners Circle on April 20 and attempted to catch it. The female dog had “visible scars and blood on her abdomen” and, despite being about 2 years old, was later determined to weigh only 33 pounds.

A man was holding a leash and walking behind the dog, Pihera said.

That man — later identified as Gary Cornelius Scott — reportedly denied owning the dog and said he thought it belonged to a neighbor. The dog was taken into custody while the investigation continued.

That investigation ultimately led to a microchip, which listed Scott as the canine’s owner, Pihera said.

Scott, 57, was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, as well as giving a false address. Gwinnett County jail records show he was released on $12,500 bond.
