A Gwinnett County mother said she had a job interview, but no baby sitter to watch her 3-year-old daughter. She made her daughter breakfast, told her she’d be back soon and left the apartment, according to police.
But after hearing the child’s cries for an hour, neighbors called 911, according to a police report obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“I kept hearing her say, ‘Mommy, Mommy’ and she was screaming,” neighbor Chappelle Williams told Channel 2 Action News on Thursday.
A Duluth police officer arrived at the apartment shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday and spoke through the door to the child, who said she couldn’t open the door, the report states. Officers found a maintenance employee at the complex, off Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.
“When the maintenance person opened the door, the little girl came out wearing a purple skirt, no shirt or shoes,” the police report states.
The officer gave the child his jacket before searching the apartment with another officer. The officers dressed the child, made her something to eat, then set to work finding the girl’s mother.
In a phone call with a police officer, Reshea Danielle Alexander, 31, allegedly said she had told her daughter she would be back soon, and that she had gone to a job interview, the report states.
Officers called DFACS, who sent the girl with a friend of Alexander’s, according to police. Then, Alexander was arrested and charged with reckless conduct.
Alexander was booked into the Gwinnett County jail around noon Tuesday, booking records show. She was released at 9 p.m. after posting $1,300 bond.
