A Clayton County man who allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend in front of her son was denied bond Monday.

Darius Deandre Evans was arrested Sunday morning, hours after Lake City police say he killed 27-year-old Iyonna Hodo at the Rainwood Apartments on Harper Road.

Evans was taken to the Clayton County Jail and charged with malice murder, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Hodo’s 9-year-old son told police that after an argument at the apartment just after midnight, Evans “shot his mother multiple times, walked out of the apartment, and then came back in and began shooting her again,” the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office said.

Evans left the apartment after the alleged shooting, and the 9-year-old rode with sheriff’s deputies to show them where the suspect might be, according to the sheriff’s office. Evans was found at his ex-girlfriend’s house, Channel 2 reported.

Hodo's family started a GoFundMe page to raise money for burial expenses and for the family. As of Tuesday afternoon, it had raised more than $1,600.

A neighbor in the apartment complex said she heard the couple fighting “all the time,” and partly blames herself for the shooting.

“I can’t believe that I let this happen,” the neighbor, Cassandra Williams, told Channel 2. “Because I never reported it.”

Williams said Hodo’s son ran to her apartment to tell her his mother had been shot and was not breathing.
